Marriage is a lifetime commitment to love and honor one another. A lifetime is a long time and people change over time.
With couples counseling the couple will look at what gets in the way of the couple’s ability to communicate. With your Therapist, you will begin to look at your communication style and how it impacts the other partner and, when needed, how making little adjustments can go a long way sending a different message.
In couples counseling, we also begin to look at how each partner receives and gives expressions of love (that are not of a sexual nature). Each partner in the marriage begins to understand differently how their choices bring the relationship closer or further apart, owning only what is yours.
Marriage goes through stages as the relationship progresses. Each individual grows and changes over the years in the marriage. Responsibilities change over the years and working to keep the focus on the relationship as the rest of life continues on, can be a challenge.
Couples counseling can be helpful when the two are looking to better understand each other and are committed to doing what is needed in the relationship for it to work. Coming into therapy with a desire to work things out is key to a successful outcome.
